The Alto de Fontefría from Arbo is a long climb, however it is inter dispersed with sections of recuperation. It begins from the main PO-400 road that hugs the river Miño. The first 5 or 6km however can be easily taken in the big ring. The climbing begins as we pass the village of Sobreiro in km6. The change in gradient is rapid, with sections of 8-10%, as we wind through the villages. The road surface is good , and there are wide verges for cyclists.
At 13km we enter into A Cañiza, the home of Galician hams. A left turn onto the N120 hits to a false flat of 2km , and finally the pitch to the summit. The final 4km are on a good surfaced wide road, that remains very quiet to traffic. The stunning view across the Miño valley from just before the summit is worth all the effort. And the descent is a spectacular 21km back to Pontareas.
