The Alto de San Xian is only 3km long, but is a delightful climb, and a twin peak with Santa Trega. It is approached from the main PO-552 A Guarda- Baiona coast road. Immediately the gradient bites as you swing off the main road. The initial ramp is 9% and this stays constant until almost the 1km mark. The climb then turns hard right and flattens for 250m, before kicking up again.
This second part of the climb is up the side of the mountain. Look to the right, and all you can see is the Atlantic Ocean. Next stop America. The gradient stays constant around 6%, and on a still day, the view can be enjoyed until the top. The summit provides another great photo opportunity. You can really appreciate the natural beauty of the coast on this climb.
