The climb of Candemil from Vila Nova de Cerveira starts at the frontier town, across the bridge from Goian. It is a gentle climb, on a quiet road, that serves to open up the Serra de Arga region , with its brutal climbs, such as Arga de Cima.
The climb starts out at the intersection of the N-13 and N-302. The gradient of the climb never hits double digits, but the steepest 9% section is in the first 500m . After that initial shock, the climb meanders up the side of the mountain through Gávea, not exceeding 6%. The road has some wide verges, but through km 2 to 4, the wooded section can be narrow. Although the road is very quiet for traffic, sometimes single file is better than two abreast. The final 2km are a gentle affair through to Candemil. At the roundabout that marks the end of the climb, there is a 90 year old water fountain. This water is pure mountain, and a joy to taste.
